Ex.Pgirl's Paris Syndrome

Ex.Pgirl and the Department of Entertainment Technology at the NYC College of Technology, CUNY, will be collaborating to create a work-in-progress showing of Ex.Pgirl’s Paris Syndrome.

The show is a dance theatre piece about a Japanese phenomenon that occurs when tourists visit Paris and experience a psychological meltdown due to the realization that Paris, the “City of Love,” does not match their idealized expectations of beauty. The only permanent cure is to go back to Japan – and never return to Paris. Through language games, spoken scenes, dance, and video interviews, a multicultural ensemble of female performers will explore the themes of madness, ideals, and cultural misunderstanding that Ex.Pgirl’s Paris Syndrome addresses. Ex.Pgirl’s Paris Syndrome is a humorous investigation of the parallels between culture shock, magical places we long for, and disappointment. Ex.Pgirl and The Department of Entertainment Technology will be collaborating to add layers of technology to the work-in-progress.

Ex.Pgirl’s Paris Syndrome is being developed as part of the HERE Artist Residency Program (HARP) and will have its world premiere at HERE Arts Center (located at 145 6th Avenue) inJune 2010. HERE is a Manhattan-based performing arts organization dedicated to supporting multidisciplinary work that does not fit into a conventional programming agenda.

The Ex.Pgirl mission is to create a cutting edge forum where female performers of diverse cultural backgrounds can create original interdisciplinary performance work that redefines cultural identity in today’s globalized community. Dedicated to a collaborative development process, Ex.Pgirl uses satire and parody, as well as powerful visual imagery, to create a humorous and magical landscape of cross-cultural interactions, misunderstandings, and revelations. “We are committed to cultural diversity and humor, and wear our names on every costume.”
