A First Look at NYC's Finest Emerging Variety Talents
* Circus * Sideshow * Vaudeville * Burlesque * Dance * Music *
Thank you for joining us tonight!
Bindlestiff Open Stage Variety Show is a response to variety artists—circus, sideshow, vaudeville, etc.—not having a stage to work on new material with a live audience. Although there are a number of open mics in the city, few provide spaces high and wide enough for the work that many of us do. We create a supportive "laboratory" for emerging artists and professionals alike to work on material, try new bits, and reawaken old acts. Join us again, the Open Stage is the second Tuesday of every month at the Voorhees Theater. Need a bit of time in the spotlight? Apply at bindlestiff.org.
Bindlestiff Family Cirkus
Since 1995 the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus has traveled the world, bringing its unique hybrid of vaudeville, circus, burlesque, and sideshow to theaters, clubs, colleges, and festivals. The company has produced innumerable cabaret shows, custom performances for special audiences, all-ages and family productions, and sophisticated adult shows. For more than a decade the company has been developing more theatrical productions, including 2001's Buckaroo Bindlestiff's Wild Wzest Gender Bender Jamboree, 2003's High Heels & Red Noses, 2005's From the Gutter to the Glitter: A Night Out with the Bindlestiffs, and 2013’s “My Last Cirkus.” From 2002-2004, Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, in conjunction with chashama, operated Bindlestiff Palace of Variety and Free Museum of Times Square, the last vaudeville house and dime museum in Times Square. In 2004 Bindlestiff instituted its annual children's performance program, the Cavalcade of Youth, in which young performers and technical staff (ages 8-20) have the opportunity to hone their skills with variety arts professionals. At the start of the pandemic, Bindlestiff started a Quarantine Edition of Open Stage, featuring hundreds of artists from around the world. And in the summer of 2021, Bindlestiff started Flatbed Follies, a live, in person program that brings Cirkus and variety arts tot he streets of New York City. Bindlestiff can be seen today on stages, at festivals, and in the streets all over the world.
Special Thanks
This program is made possible in part, through the support of New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the New York State Arts Council.
THEATREWORKS
Theatreworks, the resident theatre production company at New York City College of Technology, is composed of student, alumni, faculty, staff and community members. Since 1974, Theatreworks has been recognized in the media and theater circles for its commitment to professionalism in performance, technology, and the advancement of multicultural cast and crews in plays, musicals, dance and live events. This unique approach to theatre has given Theatreworks citywide publicity and an audience from the greater New York area.
Theatreworks performs in the Voorhees Theatre. Student technicians receive valuable training by participating in the lighting, sound, costume, publicity, video, and scenery crews for performances each year. Theatreworks alumni can be found working in the professional theatre, film, television, and concert venues in their respective communities.
—— Collaborate! ——
City Tech Theatreworks and CUNY’s Entertainment Technology Department are now accepting proposals from producing organizations for live performance-based events that show a compelling and well integrated use of technology for our fall 2024 and Spring 2025 residency. Examples might include but are not limited to: theatre, dance, music, or interactive media. We are also accepting applications from artists who want to work with our emerging media team to integrate technology with their content to communicate ideas and concepts.
For further information about the Theatreworks Residency, call (718) 260-5588 at the Entertainment Technology office in Voorhees Hall, Room V203. The application is available at citytechtheatreworks.org.
